In March the Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla invited K-12 teachers to attend a docent-led First Look Tour of their new exhibit, LifeLike. This is a fantastic service they are providing to the community and I am so glad I took them up on their offer. The exhibit features pieces that look realistic, but are made from unusual materials. Gavin Turk's 800-pound bronze sleeping bag pictured below and a jar of Ai Wei Wei's porcelain sunflower "seeds" are just two of several amusing pieces that will make you smile. They even have a pair of tiny 8-inch elevators!
Guests under 25 are free thanks to a grant from Qualcomm, so go and take your kids (for free!). For those folks over 25, both locations of MCASD are free every third Thursday of the month from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. This means you have TWO chances to see LifeLike for FREE before the exhibit closes on May 27. And if this isn't enough to convince you to go, I promise the view alone is worth the trip.
